Address by Mr. Wellington Y. Tsao
At the Annual Dinner in Honor of
European Trade, Banking and Culture Representatives
February 22, 1991
Minister Siew, Our European Friends, Ladies and Gentlemen:
We are extremely pleased to find so many of our European friends joining us at the dinner tonight in celebration of the advent of the Year of Sheep and we are extremely grateful that Minister Siew and Vice Minister Chiang of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Vice Minister Fang of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vice Minister Tung of the Ministry of Communications, Vice Chairman Tsui of the Council for Economic Planning and Development, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, and other prominent personalities have graced this occasion by their presence here tonight.
I want to take this occasion to thank all European representatives in our country for the praise-worthy contribution that each and every one of them have made to improve the business and other relations between their respective countries and our country. On the other hand, the setting up of the Swedish Svenska Handelsbanken’s Representative Office and the Office of Finnish Industry and Transport indicated that the European business community has shown growing interest to the development of our economy.
According to our customs statistics, our two-way trade with Europe in 1990 has reached an impressive amount of US$ 21.8 billion, up by 12.9% from US$ 19.3 billion in 1989, grossly exceeding the increase of 2.9% in worldwide trade. European market share in our worldwide trade has increased from 16.3% in 1989 to 17.6% in 1990. No doubt, every one in this room is in a position to take pride in past efforts in promoting trade relations between Taiwan and your respective countries. The statistics tells that we have come a long way from where we were in 1960’s to where we are now. However, our joint efforts are very much required in the 1990’s.
On this particular happy occasion, I do hope that in 1991 and beyond, together we shall further enhance economic and technical cooperation between the Taiwan and European countries. Meanwhile, I want to invite all our Chinese friends here to offer a toast to all our friends for your good health and continued prosperity in 1991.
Thank you. |
